Information Technology and Genetic Research: The Eighth White House Millennium Evening (1999)

blue print project epigenetics http://thefilmarchive.org/

October 12, 1999

Genetics (from Ancient Greek γενετικός genetikos, “genitive” and that from γένεσις genesis, “origin”), a discipline of biology, is the science of genes, heredity, and variation in living organisms.

Genetics deals with the molecular structure and function of genes, gene behavior in context of a cell or organism (e.g. dominance and epigenetics), patterns of inheritance from parent to offspring, and gene distribution, variation and change in populations,such as through Genome-Wide Association Studies. Given that genes are universal to living organisms, genetics can be applied to the study of all living systems, from viruses and bacteria, through plants and domestic animals, to humans (as in medical genetics).

The fact that living things inherit traits from their parents has been used since prehistoric times to improve crop plants and animals through selective breeding. However, the modern science of genetics, which seeks to understand the process of inheritance, only began with the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-19th century. Although he did not know the physical basis for heredity, Mendel observed that organisms inherit traits via discrete units of inheritance, which are now called genes.

Genes correspond to regions within DNA, a molecule composed of a chain of four different types of nucleotides—the sequence of these nucleotides is the genetic information organisms inherit. DNA naturally occurs in a double stranded form, with nucleotides on each strand complementary to each other. Each strand can act as a template for creating a new partner strand. This is the physical method for making copies of genes that can be inherited.

The sequence of nucleotides in a gene is translated by cells to produce a chain of amino acids, creating proteins—the order of amino acids in a protein corresponds to the order of nucleotides in the gene. This relationship between nucleotide sequence and amino acid sequence is known as the genetic code. The amino acids in a protein determine how it folds into a three-dimensional shape; this structure is, in turn, responsible for the protein’s function. Proteins carry out almost all the functions needed for cells to live. A change to the DNA in a gene can change a protein’s amino acids, changing its shape and function: this can have a dramatic effect in the cell and on the organism as a whole.

Although genetics plays a large role in the appearance and behavior of organisms, it is the combination of genetics with what an organism experiences that determines the ultimate outcome. For example, while genes play a role in determining an organism’s size, the nutrition and health it experiences after inception also have a large effect.

Information Technology (IT) is the branch of engineering that deals with the use of computers and telecommunications to store, retrieve and transmit information. The acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a microelectronics-based combination of computing and telecommunications are its main fields. The term in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958 article published in the Harvard Business Review, in which authors Leavitt and Whisler commented that “the new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology (IT).” Some of the modern and emerging fields of Information technology are next generation web technologies, bioinformatics, cloud computing, global information systems, large scale knowledgebases, etc. Advancements are mainly driven in the field of computer science.

Studio Guests:

Dr. Sudhir Murthy, P.E., Manager, Research and Laboratory, DC Water

Chris Peot, P.E., Biosolids Manager, DC Water

Donal Barron, P.E., Clean Rivers Project Manager, DC Water (Greeley & Hansen Environmental Engineers)

========================================================

Program Summary:

This program features three nationally and internationally recognized water and waste water experts at the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water). DC Water is an industry leading multi-jurisdictional regional utility providing drinking water, wastewater collection, and storm runoff treatment for millions of visitors, residents, and employees in the District of Columbia. D.C. Water operates the world’s largest advanced wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 391 million gallons per day and a peak capacity of 1.076 billion gallons per day with a service area of 725 square miles (1,026 hectares). Over 1,200 wet tons of biosolids fertilizer are produced daily for agricultural and ornamental gardening uses. The Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant is located on 153 acres along the Potomac River at the southernmost tip of the District of Columbia, Washington, USA.

Blue Plains first began operations in 1938 with primary treatment, followed later with secondary, or biological, treatment. Finally tertiary, or advanced, wastewater treatment was added for nutrient removal. The plant has already undergone nearly US$1 billion in upgrades in the last decade and has three enormous environmental projects under way totally nearly an US$4 billion investment. These three projects include: 1) Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) to further reduce nitrogen in effluent (US$950 million); 2) Thermal hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion facilities (US$400 million); and 3) The Clean Rivers Project to control combined sewer overflows and storm water treatment a US$2.6 billion project being built with/at the Blue Plains facility.
